Ultralight by Design: Pertex Quantum Air

Hi there,

Back in the late eighties, I was at an outdoor fair in Harrogate, UK — the early days of what's now the global outdoor industry. There was no roadmap yet, and definitely no Paris Fashion Week. Just a ragtag mix of mountaineers (the Burgess Bros), a few British Army lads, and a loose crew of climbers. Most nights were spent at the George Hotel with serious R&D on the agenda, drinking and carousing until we got tossed out.

That's where we first crossed paths with Pertex.

At the time, Pertex's showcase brand was Buffalo Gear, which us Yanks assumed was made from actual buffalo fur. Unbeknownst to us, it was already the go-to alpine and arctic layering system for the SAS. The real R&D behind those early Pertex fabrics wasn't happening at the George Hotel, it was happening on the sides of cold remote mountains, dreaming up how to turn a tent into something as comfortable as a hotel room.

But those nights are just the side notes. The real story is what's happened since, nearly forty years of Pertex fabric development meeting real mountain testing.

Today, in 2026, that's exactly what Beringia and Pertex are building together: fabrics x product design x athlete testing. The goal has never changed, building beautiful technical products for the global mountain experience.

Cheers to the four decades of pushing fabric further.
